Most sales training is gone in a month

Direct answer: Corporate sales training from Search Converts is built around reinforcement, because research puts skill loss at about 70% within a week of a workshop and 87% within a month. Programs combine one-on-one coaching with team sessions and call reviews, taught by someone who still sells for a living, and are measured by close rate and average deal size.

Research cited by the Association for Talent Development puts B2B rep forgetting at 70% within a week and 87% within a month. The two-day workshop is the format nearly everyone buys, and it is the one the evidence says does not stick. Corporate sales training only works when something keeps happening after it.

The problem, drawn

What happens to training after everyone goes home

Hermann Ebbinghaus mapped the forgetting curve in 1885 and it has been replicated for 140 years. Pick a reinforcement schedule below and watch the same curve change shape.

The forgetting curve, with and without follow-up

Ninety days after a training session. The only variable is how often the material gets revisited.

Retained at day 90, no follow-up — The dashed line. This is what a workshop leaves behind.
Retained with your chosen cadence —

Two honest caveats, because this is the part of the industry where numbers get repeated without anyone checking them.

First, the widely quoted 87% figure gets attributed to Xerox, to CSO Insights, and to Gartner via the Association for Talent Development, depending on who is citing it. The underlying finding is consistent and the mechanism is well established, but treat the exact percentage as directional rather than precise.

Second, the curve above is a model, not a measurement of your team. It uses the published anchor points of roughly 70% loss at one week and 87% at one month, and applies the spacing effect that reinforcement produces. It is drawn to make a shape clear, not to predict your numbers to a decimal.

What is not in dispute is the direction. A single event decays fast. Spaced repetition, retrieval practice and coaching in the context of live deals flatten the curve, and the research on that is a century old and boring precisely because it keeps holding up.

What it is worth

The case for coaching is a win rate argument

CSO Insights reported that dynamic coaching processes improved win rates by 27.9% and quota attainment by 10.2%. Apply that reported improvement to your own numbers and see what it comes to.

This applies a published third-party finding to numbers you entered. It is arithmetic, not a forecast, and certainly not a promise from us. Your result depends on your product, your market and whether anyone actually does the work between sessions. We would rather show you the calculation than a testimonial.

The material

What actually gets taught

Not a methodology with a trademark on it. Four disciplines, chosen because they are where deals are usually lost, and taught against your real pipeline rather than a case study about a fictional company.

Consultative sales training

The core discipline, and the one most reps think they already do. Consultative selling means the diagnosis happens before the prescription, and that discovery is a real conversation rather than a checklist read aloud.

Most reps talk too much, ask questions with obvious answers, and present before they understand what the buyer is actually trying to fix. We work on question design, on genuinely listening to the answer, and on the discipline of not pitching for the first fifteen minutes. It is harder than it sounds and it changes close rates more than any script.

Sales negotiation training

Almost every deal that closes has a negotiation in it, and almost nobody trains for it. Reps discount because discounting ends the discomfort, not because the buyer required it.

We cover holding price without hostility, trading rather than conceding, spotting manufactured urgency, and the specific moment where a discount stops buying goodwill and starts signaling that the original number was invented. The most valuable habit is being able to sit in silence for four seconds.

B2B sales training for long cycles

When a purchase involves six to ten people and takes months, the skill is not persuasion, it is enabling a champion to win an argument you are not in the room for.

That means multi-threading beyond your one contact, building a business case someone can forward without editing, and understanding that most stalled deals are consensus failures rather than interest failures. The market context behind this sits on our B2B marketing page.

Sales leadership training

Whoever manages the team is the single biggest variable in whether any training survives. The research is unambiguous: reinforcement by managers is what flattens the curve.

So the leadership work is practical rather than inspirational. How to run a deal review that is not a status update, how to coach a call recording without crushing the person, what to inspect weekly, and how to hold a forecast conversation that produces truth instead of optimism.

AI sales training, which is mostly not what people expect

Every team now has access to tools that draft emails, summarize calls and score deals. The useful training is not a tour of the software. It is judgment about where a machine genuinely helps and where it quietly makes you worse.

Generated outreach is a good example. It is fast, it is grammatical, and buyers can smell it, which means volume goes up and reply rates go down. Call summaries are genuinely excellent. Automated coaching scores are useful for spotting patterns and terrible as a performance metric. Research is where the real gain sits, because a rep who arrives knowing the account's actual situation earns the small slice of buyer attention they get.

We train the boundary. What to automate, what never to automate, and how to use the transcript of your own calls as the most honest coaching material you will ever have. Where automation genuinely belongs in the wider funnel is covered on our AI marketing page.

One more area that fits here rather than in its own program: sales process and protocol. Written qualification criteria, a defined follow-up cadence, agreed stage definitions, and a handoff that does not lose people. This is closer to business consulting than to training, and for teams above a certain size it produces more than any skills work does, because a good rep inside a broken process still loses.

Free, and genuinely useful, before you spend anything. We publish a large objection-handling library and a plain-English sales glossary on My Sales Help, along with self-serve sales training programs. If your budget is zero this quarter, start there. It costs us nothing to say so and it is the honest recommendation for a lot of people who land on this page.
How it runs

Two formats, both built around reinforcement

Everything is quoted after a conversation, because a solo agent who needs help with discovery calls and a twelve-person team with a broken handoff are not the same engagement and should not carry the same price.

One-on-one coaching

For owners, founders and individual sellers. Virtual, recurring, and built around the deals actually sitting in your pipeline this week rather than a curriculum.

  • Live deal work, not hypotheticals
  • Call and demo review using your own recordings
  • Objection and negotiation rehearsal before the call, not after
  • Between-session work, because the sessions are not where the change happens
  • A written follow-up so nothing depends on memory

Quoted after a call, based on cadence and how long you want to run it.

Team training

For sales teams and front-line staff who take inbound calls. A working session to establish the material, then a reinforcement rhythm so it survives past week two.

  • Kickoff session against your real pipeline and pricing
  • Spaced follow-up sessions on an agreed cadence
  • Manager coaching, so reinforcement continues without me
  • Recorded call reviews with the team, which is uncomfortable and effective
  • Written protocols: qualification, follow-up cadence, stage definitions

Quoted after a call, based on team size and the length of the reinforcement period.

What we do not sell is a one-off day. Not because it would not be easier to sell, but because the evidence at the top of this page says you would be paying for something that mostly evaporates before the next quarter. If a single session is genuinely all you want, say so on the call and we will tell you honestly whether it is worth your money.

Who is actually teaching

You would be working with me

My name is Zach Wennstedt. I run Search Converts and I do the sales coaching personally. Not a trainer we hired, not a franchisee running someone else's licensed curriculum, and not a rotating account team. If you book time, you get me.

I have been selling since 2012, and I still sell every week. Alongside the agency I operate a home-services business where I answer the phone myself, quote the jobs myself, and lose the ones I handle badly. That is deliberately relevant here. It means the material I teach gets tested on my own revenue before it gets taught to anyone, and when something stops working I find out from a lost job rather than from a survey.

Sales is the part of this business I care most about getting right. Marketing gets somebody to raise their hand. Everything after that is a conversation, and the conversation is where most companies quietly lose the money they just spent on advertising. I have watched clients pour budget into campaigns that worked perfectly and still fail, because nobody called back for two days and nobody knew what to say when they did.

What I am not is a famous sales author with a methodology named after him. There is no acronym, no certification, no book to buy. What there is instead is fourteen years of selling in markets where the phone is the funnel, plus a habit of measuring things honestly enough to tell a client their leads are fine and their follow-up is the problem.

Also worth saying plainly: I will tell you when training is not your problem. If your pricing is wrong, your lead quality is poor or your product does not do what the ads promise, no amount of coaching fixes it, and pretending otherwise would be an easy sale and a bad outcome. That judgment comes from the same place as our conversion optimization work, which is the discipline of counting what happens at the end of the chain rather than the beginning.

Buying advice

How to evaluate sales training companies

Including us. Most of this category sells confidence rather than evidence, so here are the questions that separate the two. Ask them of everyone you shortlist.

What happens after the session ends?

This is the whole question. If the answer is a workbook, a recording and an offer of further training, you are buying an event and the decay curve above tells you what happens next. Look for a defined reinforcement cadence written into the engagement, not offered as an upsell.

Who is in the room, and do they still sell?

Plenty of firms sell you a well-known name and deliver a certified associate working from a manual. Neither is automatically bad, but you should know which you are getting before you sign. Ask directly whether the person teaching has closed a deal recently, and in what market.

Is the material against your pipeline or a case study?

Generic role-play produces generic improvement. Training that works uses your actual deals, your real pricing, your genuine objections and, ideally, recordings of your own calls. If a provider has not asked to hear a call before quoting, they are selling a curriculum rather than solving your problem.

Are managers included?

For a team, this is close to decisive. Managers are the mechanism that keeps skills alive between sessions, so a program that trains reps and ignores leadership is buying a temporary improvement at full price.

What are they promising, and how carefully?

A specific guaranteed revenue lift, offered before anyone has seen your numbers or asked how long your deals take, is a sales tactic rather than a forecast. Good providers describe leading indicators, give ranges, and name their sources. Anyone quoting the famous statistics in this category without acknowledging that the attribution is contested has not checked them.

Will they tell you not to buy?

The most useful thing a provider can say is that training is not your constraint. If your leads are unqualified, your pricing is wrong, or the product does not do what the pitch claims, coaching will not fix it and a good advisor says so. We come at this from the marketing side as well, which is why we treat sales and demand as one system rather than two purchases. That perspective runs through everything we do as a conversion rate optimization agency.

Applied to us, honestly. We are a good fit if you want ongoing coaching against live deals from the person who owns the business. We are the wrong choice if you need a nationally recognized brand name on the invoice for internal reasons, a formal certification at the end, or a large-scale rollout across several hundred reps at once. Those are real requirements and other firms serve them better.
Honest scoping

When to call me, and when not to

There is no price on this page, so this section does the filtering instead. Read the right-hand column properly.

Call me if

  • You are getting enough leads and closing too few of them
  • You discount to close and cannot say when that started
  • Deals stall late, after real interest, and nobody knows why
  • You have call recordings nobody has ever reviewed
  • You bought training before and cannot point to what changed
  • You are the owner, you are the best closer, and that is now the bottleneck
  • Your team took a workshop last year and nothing survived it

Do not call me if

  • You want a one-day event with no follow-up, which I will not sell you
  • Your lead volume is the actual constraint, in which case marketing comes first
  • Nobody will do anything between sessions
  • You want a guaranteed percentage lift in writing
  • The product genuinely does not deliver what the sales conversation promises
  • You are looking for scripts to hand out rather than a change in how people sell
  • Leadership is not going to attend or reinforce any of it
