Before: about you. After: about them.

Direct answer: A strong homepage headline for a service business names the customer's problem or the outcome they want, says who or where you serve, and adds something specific, like a timeframe or proof. Replace company-first lines such as "Welcome to our website" or "Quality service since 1998" with the problem you fix and how fast.

The three-part formula

Every rewrite below uses the same structure: the problem or outcome, who or where, and one specific detail that makes it believable. Advertising legend David Ogilvy observed that far more people read the headline than the body copy, which is why the first line deserves most of your effort.

How to write yours

  1. Pull your five best reviews and underline the problem each customer had before they called you.
  2. Write that problem as a question, then answer it with your fix and one specific detail.
  3. Put one clear action right under it: call, book or get a free estimate.
  4. Add proof near the button: review count, years in business, licensing.
  5. Run the 5-second test with three people who don't know you.

Questions people ask

How long should a homepage headline be?

Short enough to read in one glance, usually about 6 to 12 words. Use the subhead for the detail.

Should my headline include my city?

If you serve a local area, yes, either in the headline or the line right under it. It tells local visitors they are in the right place.
