The 5-second homepage test
Show your homepage to someone for five seconds, then hide it. What they remember is what your site actually says.
Five seconds. Then they decide.
Direct answer: A 5-second test shows someone your homepage for five seconds, hides it, then asks what they remember. After five seconds a visitor should be able to say what you do, who it's for and what to do next. If they can't, the first screen needs a clearer headline, one obvious action and visible proof.
How to run it
Pick three to five people who don't know your business. Show them your homepage on a phone for five seconds, then take it away. Ask three questions: What does this company do? Who is it for? What would you do next? Write down their exact words.
What a pass looks like
They name your service in plain words, recognize themselves as the customer, and mention calling or booking. If they say "I'm not sure" to any question, that's the leak.
How to fix a homepage that fails
- Replace a company-first headline with the customer's problem and your fix.
- Keep one primary action in the first screen, usually a call or a booking button.
- Put proof, like reviews or a guarantee of response time, right beside that action.
- Cut anything in the first screen that doesn't serve those three jobs.

Questions people ask
Why five seconds?
It is a practical window for first impressions: long enough to read a headline and a button, short enough that only the clearest message sticks.
Can I run the test myself?
Yes. Friends, customers or a free online testing tool work. The key is testers who do not already know your business.
